Objectives and Activities

Based on the philosophy of the company - to appropriate the company profit to society - the Foundation of the Institute of Food Chemistry was launched in 1946. Founded with the aim ‘to contribute to advancement in health and nutrition of the Japanese people’, this institute has undergone transitional changes with time to encompass natural sciences inclusive of physics, chemistry and biology in 1979 - research topics that have hitherto paved the present Foundation of the Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Research. Through an approach that goes beyond the academic boundary, this institute engages in research activities to understand the fundamentals of life forms - a dream that mankind has long since cherished.

To achieve our objectives and to promote intellectual exchanges, we have embarked on a program to invite postdoctoral candidates (approximately 6 persons) from various research institutes within and outside Japan (apart from the tenured staff of the institute). We also actively participate in collaborative research activities with laboratories of various universities beside catering for our own research program.

Furthermore, we financially support and actively participate in relevant conferences, contribute generously to research grants, and provide scholarships to further promote and enrich the curriculum development in life science research. The thirty staff-members of the institute are composed of tenured executives, clerical personnel and research workers. The total asset of the institute is estimated as 817.9 million Japanese yen.
