SUNTORY INSTITUTE FOR BIOORGANIC RESEARCH

The institute consists of the following four fundamental research units in minimum, and each research project is often jointly performed by some of these research units and/or other research organizations.

Greeting by the Director
Biomolecular Research
Elucidation of both common and unique biological roles of genes, transmembrane proteins, neurotransmitters,
and secondary co mpounds of
interest, and application of the
resultant scientific knowledge
to novel industry.
Spectroscopic and
Structural Research
Structural determination of
small organic molecules
and biopolymers, such as
receptors and transporters,
using nuclear magnetic
resonance spectrometry and mass spectrometry in order to elucidate their biological functions.
Natural Product Research
Discovery and creation of novel compounds with significant biological functions are performed by the aid of overall systematic approaches of isolation, structural determination, chemical synthesis as well
as molecular biological techniques.
The targets include a wide
variety of natural products
ranging from small
molecules to biopolymers.
Computational and
Biofunctional
Research
Development of methods of esti-
mating the 3-dimensional structures of
proteins such as receptors and
transporters, and their interactions with
ligand molecules or proteins, and methods of visualization by computer graphics, aiming at the understanding of biological functions by computational sciences making use of research data on organic chemistry, mass analysis, molecular biology and other fields, and their efficient use.
